About Scott Pilcher, LPC

My name is Scott Pilcher and I have been happily married since 1993. I enjoy spending time in the Colorado sun with my wife and kids. I am blessed to have a family that shares this value. We enjoy hiking with our dogs, fishing, and camping. Colorado provides an amazing playground. I have always played sports growing up. Currently I am fascinated with the game of golf. The mental aspect of the game is such a metaphor for life that it keeps me coming back regardless of how bad I play. In my "free time" I enjoy reading self-help books and books on personal growth and success. Since I was a kid, I have enjoyed playing chess as often as I can.
Like many dads I have structured my work around my family goals. I realized many years ago that if I was going to preach the importance of family I had better be living it as well. I have structured my private practice to maximize my family time.
Being authentic and genuine are values that I strongly believe in. I have always been intrigued by human behavior and would often just watch and observe and wonder "now I wonder why that person would do that?" Now I realize the better question is ,"I wonder why I did that?" I was not a great student in the classroom through high school so when I graduated from Colorado State University in 1991 it was a great accomplishment. I received a Bachelors degree in Psychology with a minor in Human Development and Family Studies. My plan was to be a ski bum in the Colorado Rockies for a few years and then become a sports psychologist, work with professional athletes, and retire early. I wanted to take athletes where they were and make them even better.
As happens when you plan your life, life had different plans for me, a lesson that has repeated itself many times. In 1997 I graduated with a Masters Degree in Counseling. I quickly found out that my idea of becoming a "sports psychologist" was premature. In addition, my own values were beginning to change with the expansion of my family. I found myself more interested in working with families than athletes. I have found that success in relationships takes vision, determination, education, and practice. I have also found that all relationships will go through some tough times and that these tough times are when people grow the most.
FAQ
How long will counseling last?
Most clients will see changes within the first month. Many clients choose to stay longer to continue their growth and solidify their changes.
Do you see kids online?
Generally not, because the research suggest that young kids will do better with in-person meetings. My experience has also taught me that it is very difficult to get to the deeper issues when meeting with kids online.
I do work with Parents online during the 1-1 consultations.
Are you successful in helping your clients?
When parents are being supportive of the therapeutic process then my clients have a high degree of success. Parents will often share how the concerns that brought them to therapy are no longer concerns. They also report that their children are happier.
Do you accept my insurance?
Although I do accept a few insurance plans you will need to verify your coverage. You will also need to call your insurance to learn more about your deductible and co-pay.
How do I know you are the counselor for me?
Interviewing many therapists is always a great idea. Request a 15 - 30 minute consultation. Ask the therapist if they have any experience working with others who have shared a similar concern and what the results were. Your comfort level with your therapist will be the single most important ingredient to determine the outcome of your counseling.
Do you work on a sliding scale?
In a literal way I do not offer a sliding scale. However; here is something to think about. I truly believe that living a better life full of happiness and love and being able to share that love in abundance with your family would be worth a million dollars. I am positive that counseling will not cost anywhere near that amount.
Can you prescribe medication?
Only a medical Doctor can prescribe medication and I am not a Doctor. I personally believe medication to be a last resort. When medication is necessary then I find it to be useful in conjunction with psychotherapy.
Do you have groups that can help my kids be happier?
Yes I do! I find that Groups are an excellent way for kids to gain acceptance from their peers that you can't get from individual counseling. It is also a great way to normalize a child's experience and that is why I run two groups throughout the school year.
FUN WITH FEELINGS - (7-9yrs) - Helps kids manage their strong emotions and changes the way they see their emotions.
RESILIECY (10-12yrs) - This group gives Tweens the skills necessary to bounce back from adversity.
Do you also work with the parents?
Yes! I believe that parenting is the most difficult job we will ever have. There is so much confusion out there and it is hard to find answers. By working with the parents 1-1 we can get them the right information to help them make their jobs easier.
How do I get to your place?
From Academy, turn East (away from the mountains) onto Vickers and then turn right onto Erindale Drive.
From Union, turn west (towards the mountains) onto Vickers and then turn left onto Erindale Drive.
There are two buildings (you can only see 5555 Erindale from the road) on the east side of the road. Pull into the south or north parking lots. Walk between the two buildings and I will be on the bottom floor Suite 104 (formally the job service location).
